1996...the journey continues...
Our
new agenda/3 point plan:
-
Do it in Hindi - get to the common listener
-
No travelling, no tours until we get an album
-
It HAS to be a good album.
We get to work. Dahlia had already written SHA for us and now Debleena pitches in with AAMNE SAAMNE. We ask Sam Panchmukhi to help us compose. He writes KYON JUDAA, GHAME ROOH and BODYLOVE. I write MAA, TUMSE PYAAR, TUM, HIND ROCK n ROLL, EK and VAASNA YA PYAAR. We practise almost everyday.
I take a trip down to Mumbai and meet with some recording company execs who are thrilled with SHA and want to sign us in 3 months time. But, it doesn't materialize. Oh well...
Another company sends their A&R manager and a 30 page contract. The contract is beyond ridiculous. The company sank in 6 months. Big surprise.
September, 1996: Prashant is leaving for Stanford for his graduate studies. We bid him farewell with moist eyes and warm wishes. Our "gentleman guitarist" deserves all the success and our best wishes. We will miss him tremendously.
Ashish Mullick of the Times of India writes about Euphoria and "Hind Rock." It is a very good article. It is followed by a series on other Indian rock bands. There isn't a single band who doesn't make some jibe or another at our music. Sad! Only if we could all live together in peace...
October 3, 1996: We hear about this pimpled, bespectacled boy who won the best guitartist award at Rendevous, IIT. Lets grab him! Hitesh Madan enters the band. Quiet, hardworking and extremely talented, a wry sense of humour, he fits in like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle.
Yan leaves the band, quietly. It comes as a surprise. She just upped and left without any explanations. She was a great singer and a good friend. Thanks for enriching out music Yan.
A rude surprise comes later in the year when we learn that the record label that was going to sign us up went with another band from Delhi. Maybe this another test of our resolve. We must get through this disappointed as well, to make it.
Mark 5: D.J., Gussy, Amit, Benny, Hitesh, Barnali, Tara, Palash.
